I knew at once

you were the one

the nervous smile

fronting a quiet kindness

A coffee spot lingered

opposite your heart

endearing you to me

as you listened, waiting

hoping you see too

a sign for more

an opening to turn

the handshake to a kiss

The words flow

laying a path

set to smiles

leading to love

no money, no rent

no way to meet ends

yet you daydream away

hoping somebody else tends

a day laid in bed

a blanket blocking out

no light streaming in

inspiration to move about

until I’m invited again

a smile lift lips

as you start to arise

head resting on my hips

my lap brings comfort

the presence you need

to embrace the real you

as that desire you feed

a connecting you bring

to go deeper you crave

what you hold dearly

you still can save

This smile’s no mask

when I can’t possibly hide

you’ve changed my dark tide

You see beyond me

a beauty brightly deeper

what I feared steeper

Confidently soft

you’ve welcomed me home again

so I say Amen

Rosy cheeks flushing

after sharp witted comebacks

I see what I lack

Finding myself near

what I lost, I feared, I dreamed

Love’s more than I deemed

Exceeded Affections

For what else can I do

But proclaim what I know

A simple light in this rain

Falling from my eyes

My shoulders are heavy

I can’t use my cheeks

To pull up a smile

Not even to hide anymore

Yet in your voice I find

A comfort where I rest

A small smile returns

I am not alone

In this solace, delivered

I confess my love

For yours unconditional

Where time has no limit

You stay by my side

Even when I resist

Waiting for my confession

Your mutual affection exceeds

Now I share my discovery

Rooted in softest desire

Where I join your profession

Simply stated once, it’s complete

Once Again

How can I let go

When my heart so big

Holds all your love

Where you return home

You told me I have it all

Your whole heart in reserve

Now all tucked away

But revealed in your smile

You share your goal

That you want to quit

The same on you told

The night we met

It’s like starting again

With you trying to impress

But we’ve already drawn

All of you in all of me

You lean in, asking

Hints of us evident

In an exchange of stories

Ending still unknown

Onward

My friends are right

I can’t feel sorry

You made your choice

Even if you fail to act

The writing’s on the wall

Everyone can see a love

That screams its truth

Behind longing eyes

We march onward in time

Matching bands on our wrists

You reset to me, gears balanced

As your smile returns

But how can I watch

You bury a flame inside

To play house with honor

In a land you can desert

You’ve come back home

As you call it still

Knowing nothing’s changed

It’s you, me, our candle aglow

Picture Perfect

I knew it was real

Evidenced in that moment

Frozen after we met

The mere first sight of me

Created your smile, venturing

Through your vision of two

Even still my eyes see

Light as they gaze back

Upon the day you changed

Those lips turned up

Toward a new road unfolding

Paving our whirlwind love

A Simple Smile Takes You The Extra Mile

Sometimes I fake it. I don’t even always realize it. The actions come pretty naturally. Take my customer service job. I see a customer, I smile, I provide assistance. Maybe I feel that happiness with the joy in my heart. Maybe I don’t. I’m there to make those people happy. Ultimately, it makes me feel good too.

Sometimes I need to make it my job to make myself experience happiness. I possess such a natural joy, but that doesn’t mean I always feel happy. My joyful disposition pairs with my sensitivity (to keep me balanced I suppose). I need to remind myself not to get lost in the sadness after I mellow out. Those feelings can escape and get replaced with happier ones as I smile through each situation.

I smile to all customers in an attempt to keep them satisfied, the curled lips a symbol to them and a release for me. The gesture releases natural endorphins. It brings a certain authenticity to even the forced smiles. That’s probably what keeps me from getting bogged down by the rude and mean customers.

I just need to maintain this practice in my everyday life. My life gives me so many reasons to smile, but it’s still life. It comes with its own obstacles. They weight heavier on me right now.

Yet I can still smile. I just need to get some good face time to show it. That involves a variety of acts and reminders. I take the time to take care of myself, even simply looking at myself in the mirror as I make myself presentable for high standards. I use my own social media to share positive messages with everyone that I myself need to consider. My friends take time to maintain correspondence with me as we write letters and talk on the phone. All these words and reflections make me smile. The smile ultimately shows happiness that matches the joy in my heart.

The Absence Of Success

Tonight I have had the pleasure of watching one of my all time favorite movies. In Elizabethtown, Cameron Crowe paints such a beautiful picture of failure and loss. Drew Baylor finds himself facing a failure at work categorized as a fiasco, a failure of mythic proportion, right as he finds out his father has died. By the end, he embraces his carefree, deep spirited love interest Claire’s mantra to “fail big and stick around. Make them wonder why you’re still smiling.” It’s all about perseverance to get that success.

While I haven’t exactly faced failure in the same sense and haven’t experienced any significant loss lately, I still want to take that philosophy with me on my journey to improve my career and life right now. Recently, I have interviewed for a position at a company that sounded like a job I’d absolutely love and was in the perfect location. I have since found out that they have decided to choose another candidate. Not having that kind of job secured makes it more difficult for me to determine my living arrangement. All I can do is keep pressing forward, and that’s what I do. Part of that means I have to take a seemingly greater risk by moving prior to landing my dream job. At least I can transfer my retail job to whichever store I choose.

The area I choose may ultimately be the landmark of my “success.” On his way home from his father’s funeral, Drew honors his promise to Claire to take a road trip across the country. As he starts in Kentucky, he visits special places on the way back to Oregon. One place of particular interest involves the music scene in Memphis, Tennessee. The screen shows signs for big record companies and posters with Elvis. He stops to talk to a bar owner after eating a bowl of the world’s best chili. Drew even stops to visit scenes of tragedy, including the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination and the survivor tree in Oklahoma City. This mix of success, failure, and tragedy culminate the movie’s theme that the bigger picture always extends far beyond the scope of a current failure, even beyond a fiasco. As the movie points out, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “death was only the beginning of his success.” Maybe the fiasco at work is merely the beginning of Drew’s success. Either way, he maintains his smile and pursues a relationship with Claire and moves forward after losing his previous job.

I too keep smiling through the potential disappointment of not getting jobs for which I interview. The odds always are greater that I will not hear back from a company after filling out an application, let alone get an interview. Yet the odds only go up when I fill out another one. Keeping a smile on my face, I appreciate the situation in which I find myself and my determination to take efforts to increase my odds and make my environment the best it can be for myself. That perseverance will get me my next job one of these days.
