You lifted me up

when I felt down

brought hope and joy

as I turned around

You told me plans

to take care of me

I felt secure

wrapped tightly in your arms

I returned the embrace

trusted your vision

as our words built a world

of our future divined

For first sight burst

forth an awakened love

glimmered a reality

of our deeply hidden dreams

Moving from romantic comedy to realistic teenage angst, Jenny Han wraps up the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy with another sweet chapter of Lara Jean’s life in Always and Forever, Lara Jean. This story finds the titular character and her crushworthy boyfriend Peter awaiting the arrival of their college acceptance letters. As they navigate their future together with their school goals, Han hits a more realistic level than the previous books. It carries a more serious tone, but it still has its share of laughter. Once again, Lara Jean makes a positive role model.

Egg Press and Hello!Lucky promote National Letterwriting Month through their Write_On Challenge. They even sent me a card kit to get me started on more letters and included a zine for inspiration. The zine has 30 ideas for letters, and I’d like to give those prompts a whirl here.

Letter 2 is a letter to my future self:

Dear Kayla,

I hope this note finds you doing well. I want to remind you of the good in your life thus far and encourage you to keep focused on that good. The continued shift in focus helps you grow and fulfill your dreams and purpose.

By now I’m sure you’ve found your name in print another time or two, maybe even finished one of those books. If not, keep working on them. Dedicate a regular time each day or week to write. Those projects are worthwhile. I know how happy you felt as you began that young adult novel and spent Sunday afternoons at the library with Sheila. That, your children’s novel about Kensia and your hero idea all have potential. That depth you put in the pages through genuinely sharing your imagination and experience create hope and inspiration.

Keep up your work and don’t let those doubts in your head have any validation. They only come from voices who spoke curses or lies over you. Your words have a purpose, and they will find their way out.

I hope the rest of your life is going well also. You have so much going for you. Whatever you chose to pursue for school and career in terms of counseling and teaching, I hope you find fulfillment in your job and that it has the right balance of writing and engagement with people and ideas. Best of luck in all your endeavors. I love you more than you know.

Love Always,

Kayla

Tonight I have had the pleasure of watching one of my all time favorite movies. In Elizabethtown, Cameron Crowe paints such a beautiful picture of failure and loss. Drew Baylor finds himself facing a failure at work categorized as a fiasco, a failure of mythic proportion, right as he finds out his father has died. By the end, he embraces his carefree, deep spirited love interest Claire’s mantra to “fail big and stick around. Make them wonder why you’re still smiling.” It’s all about perseverance to get that success.

While I haven’t exactly faced failure in the same sense and haven’t experienced any significant loss lately, I still want to take that philosophy with me on my journey to improve my career and life right now. Recently, I have interviewed for a position at a company that sounded like a job I’d absolutely love and was in the perfect location. I have since found out that they have decided to choose another candidate. Not having that kind of job secured makes it more difficult for me to determine my living arrangement. All I can do is keep pressing forward, and that’s what I do. Part of that means I have to take a seemingly greater risk by moving prior to landing my dream job. At least I can transfer my retail job to whichever store I choose.

The area I choose may ultimately be the landmark of my “success.” On his way home from his father’s funeral, Drew honors his promise to Claire to take a road trip across the country. As he starts in Kentucky, he visits special places on the way back to Oregon. One place of particular interest involves the music scene in Memphis, Tennessee. The screen shows signs for big record companies and posters with Elvis. He stops to talk to a bar owner after eating a bowl of the world’s best chili. Drew even stops to visit scenes of tragedy, including the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination and the survivor tree in Oklahoma City. This mix of success, failure, and tragedy culminate the movie’s theme that the bigger picture always extends far beyond the scope of a current failure, even beyond a fiasco. As the movie points out, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “death was only the beginning of his success.” Maybe the fiasco at work is merely the beginning of Drew’s success. Either way, he maintains his smile and pursues a relationship with Claire and moves forward after losing his previous job.

I too keep smiling through the potential disappointment of not getting jobs for which I interview. The odds always are greater that I will not hear back from a company after filling out an application, let alone get an interview. Yet the odds only go up when I fill out another one. Keeping a smile on my face, I appreciate the situation in which I find myself and my determination to take efforts to increase my odds and make my environment the best it can be for myself. That perseverance will get me my next job one of these days.

Just because you don’t see

The sails I’ve drawn for me

Doesn’t mean I don’t cross my T

It’s up to me to choose to be

I’ve made a world you don’t see

Where my thoughts spin free

Bouncing to and fro just to be

still part of one like waves at sea

But just because you don’t see

The tide turning the sea

Don’t make you free

To be captain for me

Step back, let me be

If you want to see

An open sea grow as a tree

To let all the fruit free

Quiet Night

I’ve got the promise of a city new

Made my move in bolder light

All that’s left is you

To keep us in one sight

I know you as one of few

so tell me this is right

when I don’t hear you

again for another night

I don’t know what to do

Not all times are bright

It’s all because of you

It feels I’m losing a fight

My heart runs askew

When I’m in your mind, out of sight

All it wants is you

To shine forth all your might

Because together, always new

We dance in the light

Where the guide is you

Always in my sight

The temperatures may not have risen above 0 degrees today, but that hasn’t stopped our sweet dog from enjoying the snow.
I hope you all have cozied up in your homes today to stay safe and warm.
Tomorrow should be better, and I have especially high hopes because I have an interview!

My boyfriend may not be
Near
But his shirt is
Here

I shrug over shoulders
Covered
A part of him still
Hovered

I may curl up
Alone
But don’t hear wrong
Tone

For when I plan
Away
He goes too
Say

Join my family
Me
Too for holiday soon
See

New faces for me not
Him
A step into us and them
Prim

The proper way to say
Ring
A note with all the chorus
Sing

We too harmonize above
Discord
We find in our armor
Sword

But no battle
Sets
For firm ground
Wets

Seeds to grow
Toward
Blossomed fruit
Adored
