I knew at once

you were the one

the nervous smile

fronting a quiet kindness

A coffee spot lingered

opposite your heart

endearing you to me

as you listened, waiting

hoping you see too

a sign for more

an opening to turn

the handshake to a kiss

The words flow

laying a path

set to smiles

leading to love

Pick Me Up and Fill My Cup

I’m gazing at the sign hanging from the ceiling at Dunkin Donuts that reads: “pick up.” The pink background and white letters lend themselves to an innocently bright feel. Underneath it are cups displaying the sizes of the latte, espresso and cappuccino drinks. We all need a little “pick me up” on a regular basis, and the size can vary from person to person or even day to day.

Lately, coffee has served as a tremendous “pick me up” for me. Not only do I enjoy my quiet moments drinking coffee after breakfast, but I sip another cup later in the afternoon if my schedule permits. Maybe it’s because I’m a writer, but the slow drinking and the warmth provide such a comfort. Sometimes I muse that I would sit at a desk drinking coffee all day if I could. While I should watch the caffeine and acid levels from high coffee consumption, I’d say a vice could be much worse. Plus, I don’t drink a large every day. Sometimes I simply stick with a small dose.

My point is to find a “pick me up” and incorporate it into our schedule on some regular basis, even if it’s a weekly donut treat rather than a daily cup of coffee. I find that as my cup empties so does some of my anxiety. That makes the slowdown in my day worth it. I can continue from there to tackle the next items on my list with renewed strength as it fills my positive determination.

Let’s find a simple “pick me up” to keep us from hitting the ground. It can even vary from day to day or week to week depending on the amount of pressure needing decreased. The act of taking a moment from the regular productivity to enjoy a personalized detail makes it easier to progress the rest of the day.

As you may have gleaned from my allusions to having interviews, starting new jobs, and working at the office, I have dived into a period of transition in nearly every facet of my life. Fortunately, it involves a lot of positive change, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its periodic hiccups or obstacles. I have progressed everything as planned so far, so I thought I’d share my successes and my humorous snags with you today.

To give you an idea of what my situation was like when my job at the office started, I’ll tell you my job and living situations. I accepted a temporary position that coincided with what became my last two weeks at my job in my college’s town. This led me to switching cities (with a three hour drive between them) every few days while keeping up with a 12 day streak of work days. I experienced my first hiccup on the first night, which coincided with my first arrival in my new city.

My mom and stepdad welcomed me into their home as I transitioned between apartments. My mother focused on providing me healthy food and good rest to help with my first week. She even had a nutritive dinner ready when I first arrived. Yet, unfortunately, neither goal was met that night. The first course, the salad sent me to the emergency room. I ended up losing the benefit of the meal and getting to bed late.

Somehow, I felt alive and awake the next morning for my first day at the office. I was also fortunate enough to be handed a coffee mug branded with the company’s name within five minutes of my arrival. That was only the first sign that I had landed in the right place.

I got right down to work, able to place my mug full of coffee on my desk at my own temporary cubicle. It even had a two screen computer, which proved incredibly useful for my first big project. I was so tickled to be surrounded by professionals as I relished the opportunity to have my own area. Even the little details like coffee pots around every corner and guys in ties walking the halls added to the novelty of belonging in the office.

Remembering the pressure to sit with friends in the high school cafeteria but not knowing the climate in the professional world, I asked my mom how it looked to sit alone at lunch. She assured me people wouldn’t judge me for dining alone. To my pleasant surprise, I found a book recycling box when I entered the cafeteria to choose my seat. I eagerly sifted through the books, extracting a copy of The Red Tent to take to my table with me. Again, I knew I was in a good place. I also felt just fine having a table to myself to eat and do my own thing.

By the end of the week, I knew my way around the office and had finished several projects in various departments. My health was in a stable condition after my emergency room visit. I left my temporary job still gainfully employed and with the promise of a full time position at the other office.

I still have a lot of details through which I must sort to get myself settled, but I am well on my way to having a full time professional job in my field and a new home in the city I desired. I am anxious to see how my situation continues to unfold. It will no doubt contain more snags, but I know the bigger picture of my dreams coming true will remain the same.

beauty, blog award, celebrity icon, coffee, friends, Justin Timberlake, makeup, morning routine, quiet, social media, Sunshine Award, Sunshine Blogger, Val Kilmer

I’ve had the honor of finding a couple comments on my page nominating me for awards in the past couple days! I have also received a couple other ones throughout my blogging period and am in the process of accepting them. Again, thank you so much for your readership and support. It means a lot to me that people care to pay attention to my perspective of the world around me.

The award I share today is the Sunshine Blogger Award from rubyangel711.

Rules:
1. Share 11 facts about yourself.
2. Answer the 11 questions that were asked by the blogger who nominated you.
3. Include 11 questions for your nominees to answer.
4. Notify your nominees about this post.

I’ll start with my eleven facts about myself:

  1. I have finally figured out who Val Kilmer is and am watching The Saint as I write this.
  2. It’s been a week since my last birthday, a day I spent viewing apartments so I can make my decision to move back to a city a reality.
  3. Jimmy Fallon has been my favorite comedian since I first watched him on Saturday Night Live over ten years ago; I suppose that makes me a Jimmy Fallon hipster.
  4. I don’t watch Saturday Night Live regularly anymore, but I absolutely love all the episodes with Justin Timberlake in them. He and Jimmy are so funny together (I’m a hipster here too because I was obsessed with the first episode JT hosted back in the fall of 2003 when I was in eighth grade).
  5. Along with Justin Timberlake, I have seen my other absolute favorite artists Matchbox Twenty and John Mayer in concert within the last year.
  6. Part of what I love about the Michael Kors logo is the MK and that it shares the same letters as mine and my boyfriend’s initials.
  7. I basically have my own Bath & Body Works store in my vanity closet alongside my makeup and endless supply of nail polish. I like to change up my makeup colors and my scent daily.
  8. Valentine’s Day is just over a month away, and I’m really excited for my favorite holiday to come around again. I need to pick my fantasy celebrity date for my annual Fantasy Celebrity Valentine Day Date Draft.
  9. Part of what makes me so anxious to return to Kansas City is my all time favorite radio station The Buzz. Driving around with the radio on, I know I am home again.
  10. 10. I want to visit a place like Dubai to witness a city so new and so upscale.
  11. 11. My favorite part of the morning is the couple minutes I have to myself sipping my coffee and reading emails. It’s the quiet time to prepare myself for the day.

My answers to rubyangel711’s questions are as follows:

1. My makeup mantra is: “Find the happy medium.”

2. Justin Timberlake is my celebrity icon. Duh.

3. My favorite style of Halloween costume is somewhere between simple outfits made of items in my closet and sparkly princess type ensembles.

4. If I were invited to a cocktail at the last minute, my hair would probably get pulled into a low side ponytail with a chunk hanging in front to look a little styled.

5. It would be hard to choose only one item to bring on a three day vacation, but I might have to choose a lip gloss or balm or some sort so that my lips don’t get dry.

6. Right now I’m a pretty big fan of the new rose gold Michael Kors watch my dad and stepmom got me for my birthday. It’s beautifully classy, just like me.

7. Packing my skincare products for a weekend get away is “easy as one-two-three – cleanse, moistureize, and protect.

8. I wear my hear in its natural texture almost always. I straighten it fairly often, but that’s about all I do that can possibly change the texture.

9. When applying blush, I aim to get a healthy glow for my pale complexion and highlight my high cheekbones if possible.

10. My time-sapping makeup mishap is mascara smudges, which typically result from me hitting my cheek with the wand.

11. My all-time favorite book is Winnie The Pooh by A.A. Milne.

My eleven questions for my nominees are:

  1. Who is your favorite musical artist?
  2. What song do you most like to belt out when you’re alone?
  3. Who is your pick for the Fantasy Celebrity Valentine Day Date Draft? (You merely pick a celebrity you find attractive.).
  4. Which on-screen characters have the sweetest love story?
  5. What is your favorite makeup brand?
  6. What is your favorite scent from Bath & Body Works?
  7. If you could go to any city right now, where would you go and what would you do first?
  8. What was the last movie you saw in theaters?
  9. How do you usually spend your weekends?
  10. 10. Which social media platform do you favor?
  11. 11. How do you prefer to relax?

Every morning we get a new beginning, a fresh start to our current situations. I have returned from my latest trip to my dad’s house where I had a view of the water from the kitchen table. Now I am in the middle of a workweek in a new situation, ready to continue pursuing the view I want with renewed energy (from the extra coffee and the added motivation).
